The Department of Transport South Africa in partnership with the South African Maritime Safety Authority invites suitably qualified unemployed seafarers to apply for the Work Integrated Learning (WIL): Small Vessel Regime Programme 2026.

Internship Application Closing Date: 06 May 2026
Internship Location: Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), Eastern Cape, South Africa (with placements across multiple coastal cities)

About the SAMSA WIL Programme 2026

The Maritime Training Programme (MTP) is a 24-month Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Programme designed to provide practical training and hands-on experience in maritime safety and vessel inspection.

Participants will work under experienced mentors and gain exposure to compliance monitoring, vessel surveying, and maritime safety operations.

Programme Duration

  • 24 Months (Fixed-Term Contract / Training Programme)

Stipend

  • Monthly stipend of R10 000 for the duration of the programme

Note: This programme does not guarantee permanent employment after completion.

Placement Locations

Successful applicants may be placed in:

  • Richards Bay
  • Durban
  • East London
  • Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth)
  • Mossel Bay

Key Responsibilities

Participants will be required to:

  • Assist with inspection and surveying of small vessels
  • Participate in training and skills development activities
  • Support compliance monitoring in line with maritime safety standards
  • Participate in maritime safety awareness initiatives
  • Compile and submit inspection and compliance reports
  • Support operational duties under guidance of a mentor or surveyor

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Certificate of Proficiency (COP), Diploma in Maritime Studies, or related qualification
  • BSc in Nautical Science will be advantageous
  • Must be an unemployed seafarer or have a maritime qualification
  • Aged between 18 and 35 years
  • Must meet maritime medical fitness requirements
  • Basic knowledge of maritime safety regulations
  • Good communication and report writing skills
  • Ability to work in inland, port, and coastal environments
